Memorizing sight words takes most kids A LOT of practice, so I love to keep learning fun by playing motivating sight word games like this simple gingerbread one. It’s perfect for the holidays and, because it’s editable, it works with any words under the sun.

Just like our mega pack of editable sight word games, the activity is so easy to differentiate for different learners!

Getting Ready

Prep for this activity was simple.  The most work came in choosing which sight words for my son to practice!

When I gathered the words, I typed my them into the game board and printed it on cardstock to give it extra durability.  I knew we would want to play this game over and over again!

Then, I grabbed two playing pieces (one for him and one for me) and a die.

Playing the game was just as easy as the prep!

Big Brother and I took turns rolling the die and moving our piece that many spaces.

We read and spelled the word out loud and then wrote it on our record sheet.  This extra practice helped reinforce the spelling the word one more time.

That’s it! This Gingerbread Race was such a motivating (and easy prep) way to practice sight words.  It was a great alternative to flash cards and kept my son continually engaged!
