Getting Ready

I used a mix of Astrobright cardstock  and plain white card stock to add a fun pop of color to the hearts (below).

I printed enough for each one of my students to have one.

Then, I printed the writing page that goes behind the saying on regular printer paper. It really is such an easy, low-prep craftivity for Valentine’s Day!

Valentine’s Writing Craftivity

I began the writing craftivity with a class discussion on what each of the sayings might mean. To get their minds flowing with ideas, I asked questions like, “Why does kindness matter?” or “Why would it be cool to be kind?”

The prompt was more open-ended than I usually do because I wanted my students to express exactly what they wanted to in relation to being kind.

Once we wrapped up our brainstorm, I had students write down their sentences in their notebooks before transferring them to their final draft to make sure they were perfect!

I included a heart with primary lines for my writers who needed extra support writing legibly but most of my students wrote on the regular lined paper and did great!

Then, my students got to choose if they wanted to color their own white heart or use one of the colorful Astrobright hearts.

The assembly was really simple and perfect for young writers. They just cut out their hearts once they were finished coloring and writing on them and then glued the top of the hearts together.

Then I taught them how to fold the heart up so that their writing could be seen even while hanging on our bulletin board.

You could attach the pieces with a brad and pivot the heart around too, but we just used glue because we had it on hand.

The final product was bright and brought so much joy and kindness into the classroom.

This really was such a great Valentine’s writing craftivity to reflect on kindness during the month of February!
