Diphthong Clip Cards

If you’re teaching kids about diphthong (two letters that make one sound like OI in the word “coin”), these free clip cards are a must-try literacy center or word work station.

They’re easy to prep and fun to play!  For more word work, check out our Editable Word Work Games in our shop!

Getting Ready

To prep the diphthong clip cards, I simply printed the cards on cardstock to give them extra durability and cut them apart.

I wanted the kids to be able to self-check their answers, so I flipped the cards over and drew a dot in the correct clipping spot so kids could easily see if the pins were in the right place later.

Note: If you’ll be using the cards in a classroom, you may want to laminate them.

Diphthong Clip Cards

To begin, I placed the clip cards in the center of the table along with a small basket of clothespins.

I explained to the kids that some diphthongs like “oi” are often found in the middle of words while other diphthongs like “oy” are often found at the end of words.

I took out the diphthong clip cards.  I grabbed the top card in the stack and pointed to the picture. “This is a paw,” I explained. “I hear the /o/ sound at the end of the word. What diphthong makes the /o/ sound?”

I pointed to each of the three choices, read them out loud and had the kids repeat after me:

oy

oo

aw

With a show of hands, the kids unanimously picked choice #3: AW. We clipped the card and grabbed the next one in the pile.

After completing a few more examples as a group, I placed the cards and clothespins at a table so students could work on it independently.

Just FYI… The word “diphthong” is misspelled in this resource. Also, the pronunciation is /DIF thong/.
