Activity for ages 3 to 5.
With Christmas around the corner, it can be fun to add in a little holiday spirit to our learning centers and activities.
This printable Christmas tree number match is fun, easy-prep way to work on number recognition, subitizing, counting, ten frames, and twenty frames too with Pre-K and Kindergarten students this winter!
Christmas Tree Number Match
To prep this center, I first printed out the trees and ornaments and laminated them. I always laminate my center activities so that I can pull them out again next year. (Definitely a time-saver!)
Then, I cut the cards apart on the solid lines and stored the pieces in a Ziploc bag until I was ready to play with a small group during math workshop.
My kids were ready to tackle all numbers 1-20, but you may choose to just work on 1-10, or just focus in on the teen numbers – it’s up to you!
You can work on a lot of different skills with number match activities – more than simply matching!
For example, we first spread out the Christmas trees in number order 1-20. This made a long trail of trees, and gave us practice with number concepts like before and after when trying to figure out where to place a tree in the lineup.
After the trees were all set, we took turns picking an ornament card and counting the dots in the ten or twenty frame. Many kids can subitize the ten frames, or know the total without counting, but the twenty frames were a little trickier.
We worked together on seeing the top 10 dots as a whole, and then counting on to get the final totals for the teen numbers.
We kept pulling ornaments, counting, and matching until all of the trees had been “decorated!”
