Middle Vowel Activity Sheets

If your kids are learning about middle sounds in words, then you’ll love these simple, kid-friendly middle vowel activity sheets! They are great for review or a print-and-go activity on a rainy day.

Middle Sound Review

To begin, I chin walked some basic CVC (consonant vowel consonant) words, like “mat.”

I started with my thumb on my chin as I said “m”, then I added my next finger as I said “a” and my third finger as I said “t.”

Then, I got the kids to try “m -a -t, mat” while chin walking, too.

After orally practicing a few more simple CVC words like “fan” and “web,” I asked the kids what sound was in the middle of each word. In the “mat” example above, the class called out, “/a/.”

They had a good warm up and, when they were able to confidently identify the medial vowel sounds on their own, they used these middle vowel activity sheets for review.

For both of these activities, all the students needed were the printouts (below) and some pencils, colored crayons or highlighters.

My class did the middle sounds worksheet first. We talked about the pictures and said what each one was out loud. Then, the kids wrote the missing middle vowel sound in the middle circle.

Later on, we did the word searches for some fun review! They were a great opportunity to practice reading more simple CVC words.
