If you’re like so many teachers and homeschoolers I’ve talked to, somewhere along the way, you have probably been told that learning to read is like learning to talk – children can teach themselves how to do it without much adult intervention.

But if you follow me on Instagram, you already know that’s simply not true!

For decades, research has shown that the vast majority of students need help connecting the dots so they can learn the skills and build the neural pathways to read.

And that’s where this science of reading guide comes in!

Rather than trying to piece together all of the brain-friendly, research-backed teaching tools and strategies you need on your own, I created this go-to guide so you can find everything in one spot.

You’ll see that the resources are divided into four categories of skills students need to develop in order to become fluent readers:

  • Phonological awareness activities empower children to hear and manipulate sounds in words.
  • Phonics resources connect written letters to the sounds they make.
  • Orthographic mapping helps readers memorize the spelling, pronunciation, and meaning of new words.
  • And listening comprehension enables children to understand and think about what they are reading.

All four of these skills must be developed in order for students to become fluent readers but these resources make it easy. Just click on the resource you need and add it to your teaching toolbox.

You’ve got this!
