Ditch the Pencil and Paper with These CVC Word Sound Boxes

Your students will love practicing CVC words with sound boxes!

Consonant vowel consonant (CVC) words are three letter words that follow that exact pattern: consonant, vowel, consonant. They are some of the first words students learn to read and are the foundation for more challenging phonics skills they will learn later like blends and CVCe words.

Most students will need plenty of practice to make these words stick but this activity does the trick every time! These CVC word sound boxes are a great way to help students learn how to sound out and spell simple three letter words such as CAT, LOG, and MUG. Just click “print’ and you’ll be all set to use them in literacy centers or word work stations.

CVC Word Sound Box Prep

We’re all about low-prep, high engagement activities, and this one does it all.

Print the sound boxes on cardstock to give them extra durability. There are a couple of different ways to use these CVC word sound boxes, so be sure to run them through the laminator for added durability. Laminating will enable you to use them as dry erase wipe off cards too!

Two Ways to Use CVC Word Sound Boxes

Have you ever noticed that students love working with anything other than a paper and pencil? These sound boxes can be used two different ways and neither require touching a pencil at all!

Write and Wipe

The first pencil-free way to use the sound boxes is as a write-and-wipe activity. Students will pick a card, name the picture, and stretch it out slowly so they can focus on just one sound at a time. Then they will say the sounds a second time as they use an erasable marker to write the letter that matches each sound in its sound box.

Two cvc word sound boxes- the top sound box has an image of a cat with three boxes and students wrote cat. The second box has an image of a pig and students wrote the word pig.

We recommend using ordinary washable markers because they are super easy to remove with a damp cloth. Whiteboard markers can be more difficult to remove from laminated cards (they tend to stick), so save those for your whiteboards.

Build with Magnetic Letters

When you’re ready to switch it up, grab some magnetic letters and a cookie tray. Lay the sound boxes on top of the cookie tray so the magnetic letters can stick to them. Children will complete the same steps as before but, instead of writing the letters, they will stick them.  It’s a simple tweak but your students will be reenergized by it!
