There are so many fun ways to help kids learn colors and Cool Whip color mixing ranks right up at the top of my kids’ favorites.

This quick prep activity is a hands-on, tasty way to learn colors. I hope your kids love it, too!  For more science fun, check out our 30 Science Experiments in our shop!

Prepping the Cool Whip

To prep for our color mixing activity, I grabbed a tub of Cool Whip, a box of gel food coloring, some spoons and six plastic cups. (You can find Cool Whip in the frozen food aisle of your grocery store.)

Since I wanted my boys to keep track of the colors they made when they mixed together different primary colors, I also drew a little color mixing chart on a blank piece of paper. The extra step would help reinforce their learning.

Color Mixing with Cool Whip

My four year-old helped me scoop a mound of Cool Whip into three plastic cups. On top of each dollop, he squeezed a pea-sized amount of either red, yellow or blue – the three primary colors.

After giving each cup a really good stir, I gave my son his first challenge: finding out what would happen when he mixed red and yellow together.

My son grabbed a clean cup and filled it with one hearty scoop of yellow and a second big scoop of red. He started stirring and just a few seconds later, his new color began magically appearing.

He was THRILLED and, after taking a big bite of his orange Cool Whip, he grabbed an orange crayon and started coloring in the top cup on his color chart.

Several color combinations later, his chart was full and he gave me a happy, rainbow-colored smile. Gotta’ love nibbling on some sweet treats while you learn colors, right?!
