Combine learning and fun with this twist on a classic game.

Teaching sight words can often feel like a repetitive chore that doesn’t spark joy in your classroom. But, there is a simple solution! Sight word games make learning fun and engaging. Help students memorize sight words by playing a twist on an old classic: Tic-Tac-Toe. This sight word game is great to use as a literacy center or word work station. The best part? You can use it to help students recognize alphabet letters and sounds too!

Grab your set below and then join the priority list for our VIP teaching membership, The Science of Reading Formula, so you can unlock access to all of our teaching tools in one time-saving spot.

The Set Up

The rules of this version of Tic-Tac-Toe are the same as the original. Students take turns saving a square by writing in it. The first student with three squares in a line (either across, down or diagonal) is the winner.

Print and cut apart the sight words that students are currently learning. This sight word list is organized by phonics skill to give you the biggest bang for your teaching buck!

After the words are printed and cut, you can choose to laminate them for extra durability (and to have them prepped and ready to use year after year!). Place the cut up words in a cup or bin.

The Game

Once you have the words cut up, you’re ready to play the sight word game! Divide students into pairs. The first student shakes the cup to mix up the words and then reaches inside to pick a card. The student reads the card aloud and writes the word in a space on the Tic-Tac-Toe board. The second student then takes their turn.

Students repeat this process until one student has three in a row of the same word on the game board.

Bonus Tip

Are your students working on alphabet recognition or letter sounds instead of sight words?

Road trips can be magical—a chance to explore new places, connect as a family, and create unforgettable memories. But let’s be honest: keeping kids entertained in the car for hours on end? That’s another story!

If you’ve ever heard the dreaded “Are we there yet?” more times than you can count, you’re not alone. Long car rides can be tough for little ones (and their parents). That’s why I created the Free Road Trip Activity Pack—a collection of fun, educational games to help your kids stay happily occupied while you enjoy a smoother, screen-free journey.

Why Choose Screen-Free Road Trip Activities?

Screens can be a tempting go-to for long car rides, but there’s something special about engaging kids in activities that spark their imagination and curiosity. Screen-free play doesn’t just pass the time; it also:

Promotes Creativity: Activities like story starters and scavenger hunts encourage kids to use their imagination and think outside the box.

Builds Observation Skills: Games like Road Trip Bingo and “I Spy” teach kids to notice the world around them—a skill that benefits them long after the trip ends.

Encourages Family Bonding: Working together on challenges or sharing creative stories fosters meaningful connections.

Plus, these activities are simple, mess-free, and portable—perfect for keeping your car organized and your kids entertained.

What’s Inside the Free Road Trip Activity Pack?

The Free Road Trip Activity Pack is filled with a variety of engaging, educational games designed to keep boredom at bay. Here’s what you’ll find:

1. Road Trip Bingo

Turn your drive into an adventure by spotting common road trip sights like gas stations, bridges, or even cows grazing in a field. Kids can cross off squares on their bingo cards as they go, racing to complete a row or the entire card.

Why it works: This game promotes observation skills and adds an element of excitement to the journey.

2. I Spy Games

Encourage your kids to keep their eyes peeled with themed “I Spy” challenges. They can look for specific colors, shapes, or objects outside the window or inside the car.

Why it works: “I Spy” builds focus and helps kids stay engaged with their surroundings.

3. Story Starters

Fuel your kids’ creativity with fun prompts like, “If I could visit anywhere in the world, I would go to…” or “One day, I woke up and discovered I could talk to animals!” These story starters are perfect for sparking imaginative conversations or inspiring your kids to write mini tales.

Why it works: Storytelling enhances language skills, boosts creativity, and keeps kids happily distracted.

4. Scavenger Hunt

Turn your road trip into a real-life treasure hunt! The scavenger hunt includes a list of items to find during the drive, from construction cones to billboards. Kids can check off each item as they spot it.

Why it works: Scavenger hunts combine problem-solving, teamwork, and a sense of accomplishment—plus, they make the drive fly by!

How to Use the Road Trip Activity Pack

Getting started is easy!

Download the Pack Below: Click the big blue “download here” button at the bottom of this post.

Print and Prep: Print the activities and pack them in a folder or clipboard for easy use. You can even laminate some of the sheets to make them reusable with dry-erase markers.

Bring Supplies: Don’t forget pencils, markers, and a hard surface for writing.

Set the Rules: Before hitting the road, explain how each activity works and let your kids pick what they’d like to do first.

Pro tip: Mix and match activities throughout the trip to keep things fresh and fun.

To prep the puzzles (below), I began by printing them on card stock to give them extra durability.

Then, I ran them through my laminator and cut along the dotted lines to separate the pieces.

As I cut apart each of the 24 puzzles, I slid them into separate snack size zip bags so kids could easily grab a complete set.

That’s it! The prep took just a few minutes to complete.

CCVC Puzzle Time

My students and I have been working on blends or digraphs, so they were ready to tackle both CCVC words at the same time.

I spread four of the CCVC puzzles out on a table at a time so the kids could find the matching pieces.

As we went along, I talked about the pictures with the kids and let them know the names of some of the trickier words like clam. It was great to see kids recognize the blends we have been learning like “fr” in frog.

My students loved solving the puzzles and sounding out the words at the end. Such a simple way to reinforce their learning.

What’s the best way to practice sight words? Turning it into a game! When learning feels fun, students stay engaged. When students remain engaged, they learn. This interactive sight word game keeps students on the tips of their toes and creates some friendly competition too!

Give Showdown a try and then join the priority list for our VIP teaching membership, The Science of Reading Formula, so you can unlock access to all of our teaching tools in one time-saving spot.

Game Setup

The set up for this interactive sight word game is simple – all you need are blank index cards and markers. You likely already have those in your classroom!

Pick five or six sight words and have students write each one on a separate index card. Don’t forget to teach your sight words by phonics skill to maximize reading growth!

<img decoding="async" class="aligncenter wp-image-12914 size-large" src="https://www.playdoughtoplato.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/06/Showdown1-682x1024.jpg" alt="Sight word game with two rows of flash cards.
Ready to Play

Showdown can be played as a whole class activity but also works great in literacy centers or partner work at students’ desks.

To play, every student spreads out their own stack of sight words on a flat surface like their table or floor so they can easily read them.

Player One secretly picks a card from their collection and reads the word aloud. Then, the second student quickly reads through all of their cards to find the word their partner read. When they find it, they pick it up and hold it against their chest to show they are ready for the last step.

Partner One then calls out “1-2-3 showdown!” and both partners hold up their cards.

With St. Patrick’s Day quickly approaching, this fun leprechaun-inspired word family sort is a must-try.

Kids will love playing with gold (who can blame them?!) and YOU’LL love that they’re practicing important reading skills.

To make it easier for you to get EVERY student bigger results, the freebie comes in TWO versions so you can quickly adjust the difficulty:

One focuses on rhyming

And the second option stretches students to spell CVC words.

Grab your copy below and then hop over and snag our 26 more word work centers your students will beg to repeat in our shop!

What Are Word Families?

Put simply, word families are groups of words that share similar spelling patterns. For example, the words (hot, pot, cot) are all part of the -OT family. The words (cat, sat, pat) are part of the -AT family…

Word families are great because they help students work on important reading skills including rhyming, recognizing spelling patterns and reading more fluently.

Getting Ready

Thankfully, the prep was quick and easy.

I printed off the pots of gold, the coins and the record sheet.

I slide the pieces through my laminator to make them durable enough that I could use them again and then cut along the lines to separate the pieces.

Viola! My prep was done.

Word Family Sort

With everything in hand, I invited my son over to join me.

(I was tempted to use my awesome leprechaun impersonation but decided to save it for St. Patrick’s Day. ?)

I explained that we were going to work on word families and, just like all of the people in our family have the same last name, all of the words in a word family end in the same sound.

I showed my son the leprechaun pots and we read the word families out loud together: -ET, -OP, -UG.

Then, I gave him the first piece of leprechaun gold and asked him to name the picture he saw.

“Pet!” he announced confidently.

Thinking carefully about the last sound he heard in that word, I challenged him to figure out what pot was a match.

After stretching out the word several times and focusing on the last sound, he slid the gold underneath the -ET pot.

One piece after the next, my son continued reading and sorting the coins from the pile until they all landed in the right spot.

Once all the gold coins had been placed by the correct pot, it was time to do a little review and writing practice!

After carefully reading each word out loud, my son wrote each word into the correct word family on the record sheet.

These sight word games are perfect for partner work.

Sight words like THE, FOR, and TO make up a *huge* percentage of the text kids read, so memorizing them is a great way to increase students’ reading fluency. And these print-and-go sight word games make it extra fun for kids to practice them! Since they’re editable, you can easily work on any words under the sun: digraph sight words, blends, CVC word families… the possibilities are endless!

Grab your set below and then join the priority list for our VIP teaching membership, The Science of Reading Formula, so you can unlock access to all of our teaching tools in one time-saving spot.

Treasure Hunt Sight Word Game

The prep for this game is as quick and easy as it comes! To customize the sight word games, simply type 18 words on the getting started page and let the file automatically pop the words into the right spots on the pages.

This game is perfect for small group work because you just need two students to play. The first student rolls the die, moves their game piece, and reads the word they land on out loud. Both students then write the word under the column “Player One” on the record sheet.

Then it’s Player Two’s turn. They will roll the die, move their game piece, and read the word out loud. Both students will write the word on their record sheet under the second column labeled “Player Two”.

Students will continue playing until a player reaches the finish line. Whoever reaches the finish line first wins the game!

Egg Flip Sight Word Game

To prep the second game, print Egg Flip on cardstock and laminate the pages to give them extra durability. Cut along the black lines to separate the eggs and spread them out face up on a flat surface. Grab a spatula and your students are ready to play.

Working in partners, assign one student to be the caller and the other student to be the flipper. The caller secretly picks a word and reads it out loud. Then, the flipper uses the spatula to flip over that egg.

To give your students practice writing the words, they can spell each word that is flipped on their record sheet like this:

<img decoding="async" width="827" height="1024" src="https://www.playdoughtoplato.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/12/Free-Sight-Word-Game-for-Kids-827x1024.jpg" alt="Word egg flip sight word game lays on the table with a record sheet and sight words printed and cut out in the shape of eggs.

One of the best ways to help your child learn and remember sight words is to play a sight word game. One day, as I watched my boys eagerly race two Matchbox cars at a time down their track, I was struck with an idea: With one simple twist, their playful competition would become a motivating sight word game! Sight Word Drag Racing was born.

Into all things sight words? Check out our best-selling Editable Sight Word Board Games in our shop!

Getting Ready

Before inviting Big Brother to play the sight word game, I gathered a few supplies:

8 small cars. {Cars with flat roofs stick to the labels best.}

8 small labels.

A marker.

A race track. {I used my boys’ ramp but you could also make one out of cardboard.}

A printout of the Drag Racing Bracket available here.

I wrote one sight word in the middle of each label and stuck it onto the hood of a race car. Note: When choosing the sight words to work on first, many teachers use the most common English words in print. The first 20 words on that list are: {a, I, it, the, and, in, of, to, he, is, that, was, look, you, said, for, up, go, we, play}.

Sight Word Drag Racing

I helped my son write one sight word on each line of the Drag Racing Bracket. The left hand column looked like this:

The two words in the blue box raced in the first round. In this example, the cars labeled {my} and {he} were assigned to Heat One. The two sight words in the green box raced next, and so on.

Then came the fun!! My son placed the cars that were racing in Round One at the top of the ramp. After counting down in my best announcer’s voice, he launched them down the track.

Getting Ready

To make the game, I gathered a few supplies:

Soccer printable available here

Scissors

Bottle tops

Glue stick

After printing out the soccer pages, I cut out the circle sight words.

Then I used my glue stick to attach one sight word to the top of each bottle cap. This one’s from an empty milk jug we had in our recycling bin.

Sight Word Soccer

Teachers often help children memorize sight words by having them spell it out loud, cover it and spell it again, and then open their eyes to check their spelling. Called “spell, cover, check”, this strategy is surprisingly effective. You will be using a similar procedure when you play Sight Word Soccer.

Have your child pick a bottle cap, place it in the center circle, and spell it out loud. In this example, your child would say, “{Are} A-R-E.”

Then ask your child to close his eyes and spell the word again without peeking. After he spells the word, he will open his eyes and check the spelling. If he spells it correctly, he can take a shot. Using two of his fingers, he will flick the top toward the goal. If all edges of the top pass through the goal without touching the sides, he earns a point.

If the top does not clear the sides, he must place the sight word back in the pile and try again later.

The next player then takes a turn spelling, covering and checking a sight word. The first player to earn ten points wins the game.

Writing the Words

Thanks to Shelisa over at Think Magnet, there is one more page included in the printable. Each time that your child shoots a sight word bottle top, he can record it on a T-chart with two columns: {Goals I Made} and {Goals I Missed}. It’s an entertaining way to encourage your child to write the words too.
