What’s the trick to keeping students engaged while practicing challenging skills? Making learning FUN! Students learn best when learning feels more like play than work which is why these digraph games are sure to be a classroom hit. The bright, hands-on digraph wheels make a wonderful literacy center focused on practicing common digraphs such as CH- and SH-.

Digraph Game Prep
These digraph wheels require minimal prep and can be used time and time again. That’s music to our time-saving teacher ears!
Start by printing the digraph wheels on cardstock for extra durability. Then, cut around the outside border of each circle. Just a couple more steps and you’re done!
Self-correction is an important skill that students can begin practicing in the early elementary grades. This high-level skill allows them to take ownership over their learning and helps promote independence. To help students be able to self-correct, add a small dot to the back of the digraph wheels to mark the correct clipping spots.
After each digraph game has been marked with the correct answer, run them through a laminator for added strength. Fill up a small basket with clothespins and that’s it! You’re ready to play.
Using the Digraph Wheels in Your Classroom
There are many different ways that you can use this digraph activity in your classroom. Making them a literacy center is a great place to start!
Begin by laying out the digraph wheels next to the basket of pegs. Choose any digraph to start. For example, grab the QU wheel and ask students to place a clothespin on all of the pictures that have a “qu” sound. Students will likely be able to spot the more familiar pictures, like queen. For less familiar words, students may need you to name the words first so they can match each one to the picture and then listen for the matching sound.
Early finishers are a common part of any classroom. Challenge those who finish early to (quietly!) make a list of other words that contain each digraph. I bet they’ll think of words that we hadn’t even thought of!
