What are Syllables?

Put simply, syllables are parts of words that have a vowel sound. Cat has one syllable: /cat/. Elephant has three: /el/  /e/  /phant/. And helicopter has a whopping four syllables: /hel/  /i/  /cop/  /ter/!

I began by printing the cookie jar and cookies on cardstock for added durability.  Then ,I cut along the outside edge of each piece to separate them.

When I was ready, I asked the kids to sit in a circle around the cookie jars.

We began by using “body beats” to identify the syllables in our names. For the first syllable, we placed our hands on our heads, for the second syllable, we placed our hands on our elbows and for the third syllable, we placed our hands on our shoulders.

Alternatively, you may like to clap the syllables or get the kids to tap the drums on the cookie jar mats with their fingers as they say each syllable.

Next, the kids took turns choosing a cookie. They used “body beats” to work out the number of syllables and placed the cookie on the corresponding jar.

At the end, we reviewed by body beating the syllables in all of the pictures.

These look great thank you. For center work I put a sticker on the cookie jar then put a matching sticker on the back of the cookie so it would be self checking.
