3 Teaching Tools to Teach Beginning Consonant Blends

Save these for when students learn beginning blends.

Once students have mastered individual letter sounds, they’re ready to move onto blends. Beginning consonant blends are two letters at the beginning of a word that are pronounced together in one syllable. The sounds are pronounced one after the other so quickly that they almost seem to blend together.

This mini pack includes three resources you’ll love: consonant blend posters that are great to use for a classroom display or flashcards, dice that make it fun for kids to brainstorm different beginning blend words, and because we love making your teaching life easier, you’ll also get a chart of blend examples that you can print off and slide into students’ reading or writing folders.

Grab all 3 teaching tools below and then join the priority list for our VIP teaching membership, The Science of Reading Formula, so you can unlock access to all of our teaching tools in one time-saving spot.

Consonant Blend Posters

When you’re ready to start teaching blends, focus on one poster at a time. Name each blend and brainstorm a list of words that start with that blend. For example, when introducing the GR blend, students might think of words such as GREEN, GRILL, GRAPES, GRASSHOPPER, GREEDY, and GRASS.

As the class works together to brainstorm their word list, write down their answers and draw a line underneath the blend to highlight its position in each word. Then have the class read the words together out loud. Students will likely come up with their own words (probably ones you wouldn’t have even thought about!) but if they get stuck, use our chart of consonant blend examples for inspiration.

After you’ve introduced the first blend, hang up the poster with your students’ ideas and use the printed posters as flashcards to help them recall the sound.

Six beginning consonant blends posters hung up on the wall. Each poster has an image to represent the blend.

Blend Dice

The dice are an extra fun way for students to practice consonant blends during literacy centers or partner work. Once the dice are assembled (we love using cardstock for extra durability), students roll them one at a time and name a word that begins with the blend that lands on top. For example, if a student rolls CL, he or she might say “cloud”.

Looking to take it up a notch? Have students write down the word they say and draw a picture to make their own blend book.

The dice are a great way of helping children orally produce single-syllable words by blending sounds.

        Hi there!
When you click the blue “Download Here” button, a pop-up should open. You can try checking to make sure your browser isn’t blocking pop-ups from the site or try using a different browser. If you happen to be attempting the download at school, your district’s web filter may be blocking the pop-up. Let me know if you’re not able to get the posters!
