  1. Because of reading your book in the summer, I made several changes to my teaching, including using sound boxes this school year. I first introduced the use of sound boxes when teaching high-frequency words (our district requires teaching these words right from the start). Orthographic mapping has been a huge success and since we have been unlocking so many sounds on our sound wall, I’ve introduced sound boxes using CVC words. We’re making significant progress for this time of the year, so this week, I introduced a sound boxes center activity and the children are so excited about it. We use counters to map sounds in words and several children are taking the next step in recording the graphemes to match phonemes. I was very hesitant at the beginning to try new strategies as I’ve been so used to doing what I was doing all these years but now I have not only witnessed confidence in my abilities to teach according to science but confidence in my young students as they are working hard to develop into fluent readers (and are thoroughly engaged in doing so).     1. There is so much to celebrate that I’m not sure where to start, Shannon! Thank you for being honest about your initial hesitation to try new things. That’s such a natural human response and yet we rarely acknowledge it. Change can feel really unnerving but you pushed yourself to experiment so you could test whether or not you’d see a difference. I *love* the courage you’ve shown. It’s inspirational!

  2. First, I love your sound mapping! I find it very helpful with students. (We had a short week due to a local festival so I have not tried everything yet.) Questions: How is the reading roadmap different from the Science of Reading training that went with your book last winter? I did purchase the bonus pack of activities that went with it. By the way I LOVED it! I watched all the videos again before school started this year. Also how is it differnt from your membership? Thank you, long time follower.

    I wasn’t able to watch the sessions live and I’m just catching up now. I noticed that the day 4 and day 5 videos aren’t actually day 4 and 5 (they are repeats of day 2 and 3 I believe).

      That’s so strange! When I play those videos, they do play as days 4 and 5. Maybe if you try refreshing your page they will show up properly for you. Fingers crossed!
