You may be familiar with the high energy, nail biting dice game called Beetle or Cooties. Each side of the die is assigned a different beetle body part (one is for an eye, two is for an antenna…) Players take turns rolling a die and drawing the corresponding body part. The first player to add all body parts to their beetle is the winner.
My kindergarteners L-O-V-E-D this game so it was an obvious source of inspiration for creating an addictively fun sight word activity. Since my stomach turns at the mere mention of a beetle, I decided to name the game “Roll a Sight Word Alien” instead.
Supplies:
- Several blank sheets of white paper.
- A couple of markers.
- A die or wooden cube.
- A printout of the Sight Word Alien Game Sheet in the right hand column.
- Blank circle labels.
To Play:
Write each of the words {for, was, of, the, it, have} on a different label. Then stick one label on each side of a die or wooden cube like this:
Give each player a blank piece of paper and a marker. Ask Player One to roll the die and read the word that lands on top. In the example below, the player would say, “the”. She would then look at the Sight Word Alien Game Sheet and see {the} is matched to an alien body.
Player One would draw an alien body on her paper.
Next, Player Two would roll and draw the corresponding alien body part on her own sheet of paper.
If a player rolls a body part that she does not need, she loses her turn. For example, since the alien shown on the Sight Word Alien Game Sheet has only one body, if Player One rolled {the} a second time, she could not draw a body on her paper again. Therefore, she would lose her turn.
The first player to roll and draw an alien is the winner.

So cute! We used to play this in my classroom, but never with an alien–I love it!
Thank you, Megan!! I’m thrilled that you enjoy the twist.
