Camping Writing Prompts

Get the creative juices flowing by reading a favorite camping story. Then, ask your students to turn to their neighbor and take turns sharing some of their favorite camping or hiking stories. They’ll love talking about their experiences and they’ll be building their storytelling skills while they’re at it.

After the class has had enough time to share, hand out the first writing prompt and a colorful writing checklist to each child.

Each page has vocabulary words that are relevant to the writing activity. Some students might be familiar with each word while others won’t, so it is important to pre-teach the vocabulary so everyone is set up for success. Read each word together, write it down on the white board, write a quick definition, and draw a picture.

After you’ve taught all of the vocabulary words, it’s time for students to become authors!

Once each student has written their story, prompt the class to use their writing reminder card to check their punctuation, spelling, and content. If you’re looking to incorporate more cooperative learning in your classroom, this is a great opportunity to have students peer edit their classmates’ writing.

After each page is written, allow students some time to color the top.

Work your way through each of the five writing prompts throughout the week. Once all of the pages have been completed, children can color their book cover and staple their “Camping Adventure” book together.

Voila! Your students will have officially become authors.
