Before kids learn how to write, they need to develop the hand strength and hand-eye coordination they’ll need to make their pencil do what they want it to do. That’s why there are so many fine motor activities floating around on Pinterest. The more kids practice – the better they’ll get.
Today’s activity is a low-prep way to help kids build those skills as they get in the Valentine’s Day spirit.
Getting Ready
This gluing fine motor activity prep was simple and quick.
I cut out a construction paper heart and drew small black dots on it. Then, I grabbed a bottle of glue and a handful of table scatter hearts I’d picked up from the dollar store.

I called my four year-old son over to join me. “I know what to do!” he said. “I’m going to put glue on those black dots, right?”
“You’ve got it!” I replied. “We’re going to give your hands a little exercise. Try to squeeze just a little bit of glue on a dot and then stick a sparkly heart on top.”
C quickly got to work on his fine motor activity.
As the photo shows, C’s definition of “a little glue” was different than mine. 🙂 As his fine motor skills continue to develop though, I know those glue dots will get smaller and smaller.
After several minutes of concentration, C’s work was complete and he was excited to show off his final product. This fine motor activity can be enjoyed in the classroom or at home!
