ABC Art Book

Making an ABC book is a fun, hands-on way to introduce children to letters and help them understand how those letters are used to make words. This free printable ABC book takes all of that learning one step further by introducing kids to art techniques including apple printing, car painting and (my personal favorite!) elbow stamping!!

Getting Ready

Making my boys’ ABC art books was quick and easy. I printed the pages on white paper and headed to the UPS Store down the road to bind them. Five minutes and $3.80 later, I walked out with a nicely bound book.

(Sliding the pages into a 3 ring binder would work well too.)

My boys LOVE art projects so they were THRILLED when I told them they’d each make their own book filled with 26 different activities – one for each letter of the alphabet. Starting at the beginning of the book, we completed three or four pages each day. When there was a messy paint project in our lineup, we worked on it last so that we could leave the page open and let it dry.

We did blue block stamping. (I slid a sheet of wax paper underneath the Bb sheet to keep the paint from soaking through to the Cc page.)

A Couple Notes

  • On the Ll is for lace collaging page, we cut up paper doilies I found at the dollar store and glued them to the page to make pictures. My oldest turned his pieces into a snowman and my 3 year-old made his a dog.
  • For the Oo is for orange O page, we stamped empty toilet paper rolls to make Os.
  • I cut out a pile of red rectangles and had the boys glue them on the Rr is for red rectangle collaging page.
  • The boys stamped an X stamp on the Xx is for x stamping sheet.

Thank you so much for this free download. I’m trying to help my son and his wife teach my 4 yr old granddaughter. They are hard working parents who don’t have as much time with the kids that I do. I hate them to be stuck inside all the time watching TV.

    What is ice cube painting?

    1. Hi Paula,
      Thanks for reaching out.
Ice cube painting is painting with ice cubes. Using an ice cube tray, drop in 5-6 drops of food coloring in each of the compartments.
You can use different colors in different compartments, or even mix colors to create new ones. Then, fill each of the compartments with water, stir with a toothpick, and allow it to freeze overnight.
The next day, you can pop out the cubes and use them to paint. It does get a little messy, but it’s a fun art activity for kids!

  10. What is Elbow Painting? Elbow macaroni?
I’m so excited about this! I’m an art teacher and was having to really re-think my plan for a certain really low K5 this year. Planning to use this as a starter activity for their art time.
    Thank you!!

      Hi Mollye!

You can absolutely use elbow macaroni! When we created this the intention was to have kids dip their elbow into paint and then “stamp” the page with their elbow. Both options would be super entertaining, don’t you think?!?

      Warmly,
      Alex
