With three kids who are 4 and under in our house, we play ABC games nearly every day. There are so many fun ways to practice letter names and sounds and Alphabet Ball is one of our favorites. It’s a low prep, active way to help kids practice the ABCs.

Getting Ready

To start, I gathered my supplies: a $1.00 beach ball I purchased from Target and a Sharpie. This project was already looking like a good first pick!  I only needed TWO supplies.

Then I invited my 2.5 year old, C, to join me.  Since he isn’t ready to read sight words yet, I changed the activity a little bit by asking him to brainstorm letters as I wrote them on the ball.

Then came C’s favorite part of this ABC game!  He tossed the ball into the air as high as his little arms would let him.

When it landed, he picked it up with both hands and named the letters that his thumbs were touching. If he didn’t know the letters, I simply named them and asked him to repeat after me.  His smile says it all, doesn’t it?! Alphabet Ball was fun, fun, fun.
