My kids are always hate watching their snowmen slowly melt away but, with this sparkly playdough snowman in a jar, they’ll never have to worry about having a dropping snowman smile again!

My kids had so much fun creating families of snowmen that we decided to share the fun by making these playdough snowmen in a mason jar kits as gifts for friends.  Then, our Playdough Mats are the perfect compliment to these cute snowman!

Sparkly Snow Playdough

The first thing we did to make our snowman mason jar was whip up a batch of snow playdough.

I used the ultra smooth, delightfully squishy one pot playdough recipe and simply added a ton of glitter and a wee bit of peppermint extract to give it a hint of winter.

We used:

  • 3 cups of flour
  • 3/4 cups of salt
  • 6 tablespoons cream of tartar
  • 3 tablespoons of vegetable oil
  • 3 cups of water
  • 2 teaspoons peppermint extract
  • 1/4 silver or clear glitter {I prefer the subtle shimmer of the clear}

After my daughter carefully measured out all of the ingredients into a pot, she mixed them until they were smooth.

Then she handed me the pot and I cooked the gooey mixture, stirring almost constantly over low heat until the dough thickened and started pulling away from the sides of the pot.

I turned off the heat even though the dough was still slightly sticky since it loses the stickiness as it cools.

While the dough was cooling my kids began putting together the little baggies of snowman parts for the kits.

They decided that two snowmen were better than one so we included enough supplies to make a pair.

For the face, we added google eyes, cloves, and carrot noses made out of orange pipe cleaners.

NOTE: Cut pipe cleaner can be quite pokey so make sure to turn the ends in so no fingers get pricked.

For the arms, the kids added some small twigs I cut from a tree in our yard.

Finally, my daughter cut 1×6 inch strips of fabric and snipped small slits in the ends to make them look like scarves. Ribbon would also work for scarves, but I found fabric wraps stay put a little more than ribbon does.

Making a Playdough Snowman in a Jar

To make the snowman in a jar, my daughter helped me roll two balls of snow playdough for each mason jar.

The round balls wouldn’t fit in the mouth of the jar so I rolled the ball into a cylinder shape and slid it into the jar.  Then I gently pressed the top of the cylinder to make the dough more of a ball shape.

I repeated with the second ball of dough and then we added the baggie of snowmen parts on top of the dough, screwed on the lid, and turned our attention to decorating the outside of the jar.

For the jar, I used my handy hot glue gun to attach google eyes and a pipe cleaner carrot nose.

Black permanent marker made drawing a mouth a snap.

Next,  I wrapped ribbon around the middle of the jar and attached it to the jar with a small dab of hot glue.

I folded the ribbon to look like a scarf and held it in place with a couple more dabs of hot glue.

For some of the jars, the metal lid looked like a cute tin hat so we left them as-is but, for other repurposed jars, we decided to add fun and festive hats.

I grabbed a few fabric scraps, cut out some large rectangles {about 5 x 12 inches}, and attached the fabric to the lid with hot glue.

I ran a bead of hot glue all around the edge of the lid and then attached the long end of the fabric to it, making sure to start and finish in the back.

Now, I had a cylinder of fabric on top of the jar, so I bunched up the top to make it look like a knit hat and glued the fabric together with hot glue.

A pom pom glued on the top finished off the hat and hid the messy looking scrunched up fabric.

Super cute gift for kids. Make playdough snowmen kits in a jar!Alternatively, instead of securing the scrunched up fabric with a hot glue, you could tie it with thin ribbon a couple inches from the top and then fray the top {by cutting slits} to look like a tassel.

The finished playdough snowmen in a jar looked so cute all lined up waiting to be given away.

I don’t know what my kids enjoyed more – playing with the dough, making the super cute snowmen jars, or watching their friends smile with delight when they gave them as gifts.

Adorable gift for kids! Make a snowman kit in a jar.
