Getting Ready

My prep work for these counting cards was so quick and easy!

I printed the sets (below) on cardstock to give them extra durability, cut along the lines to separate the pieces and slid them through the laminator for easy reuse.

Then, I grabbed a vis-a-vis marker and invited Middle Brother (age 5) over to join me.

Farm Counting Cards

For kiddos who are still learning to count objects one at a time, simply grab the 1 to 10 cards and have them work through the series in order – reading the number written at the top with them to help children learn what each number looks like.

(Drawing oval eggs is a great fine motor activity for little hands too!)

Since Middle Brother was ready for a challenge, we worked on counting on from a number.

He pulled out the four card first. I asked him how many eggs were already drawn and he immediately replied, “two!”

We pretended to stick the two in our head by tapping on our forehead, and then counted up as he drew eggs three and four.

Counting up proved even more helpful when Middle Brother grabbed the sixteen card. Since nine eggs were already drawn, he popped a nine in his head and counted, “ten, eleven, twelve, thirteen, fourteen, fifteen and sixteen” as he drew. Such a big time saver!
