This science project and art activity in one is a memorable way to help kids learn about the four stages of the butterfly life cycle: egg, caterpillar, chrysalis and (the most exciting of all!) butterfly. It’s a perfect addition to a life cycle unit, spring science activity or homeschool project.

Getting Ready
To prep, Middle Brother (age 4.5) helped me gather our supplies:
- Life cycle coloring sheet (below)
- Crayons
- Scissors
- Glue stick
- Stapler
- 3 inches wide x 24 inches long strip of green construction paper (To make ours, I stapled together the ends of two 3 x 12 strips to make it just the right length.)
Butterfly Life Cycle Hats
Once we had everything ready to go, Middle Brother began coloring each stage of the butterfly’s life: egg, caterpillar, chrysalis and butterfly.
Then, I helped him carefully cut around each picture and its corresponding label.
We recently read the National Geographic easy reader “Caterpillar to Butterfly”, so Middle Brother was able to arrange the butterfly life cycle stages in order pretty quickly.
After I quickly checked his sequence, he began gluing the pictures and labels onto the green construction paper.
Then, I stapled the two ends of the hat together in a circle to make the brim of his hat.
He couldn’t wait another second to put it on his head!

These headbands turned out so cute! We paired it with a nonfiction reader and the Dr. Suess’s Learning Library book about butterflies!
Hooray Diana!
We love to hear that and are so excited that you found the perfect book to pair with it!
Thank you so much for stopping by and telling us how it went.
Warmly,
