Awesome Boys’ Writing Pack

Jun 1, 2015

Activity for ages 3 to 8.

As a former kindergarten teacher and mom to two preschool boys, I know firsthand how challenging it can be to make writing fun for boys. That’s why I set out on a mission to create a motivating writing journal that every boy on the planet would love. This awesome writing pack is chock-full of eye catching covers, engaging story prompts and super awesome extras that make writing fun for boys and easy on you.

Peek Inside

I wanted the pack to be super versatile so I designed it with plenty of options so you can easily tweak it for your specific needs. The pack includes 90 motivating story prompts about things boys love most – dinosaurs, pirates, outer space, monsters…. need I say more?!

Awesome Boys Writing Pack

If you want to use the set as a journal, print all of the pages and have kids work through each story one by one. OR, if you’d rather pick and choose the sheets that most interest your boys, look through the set and print the winning prompts.

When you’re making copies, be sure to consider how capable your writers are. For preschoolers and early kindergarteners, you’ll likely want to leave the sheets as they are so kids have just a few lines to fill with writing. But for more advanced writers (later kindergarteners and first graders), I also included a blank lined page that you can copy on the back of each story prompt to encourage them to stretch their stories and add lots of details.

To make the journals even more exciting, I included bright, eye catching covers

Plus black and white versions in case you’re a classroom teacher with limited access to colored ink.

To help kids take their writing to the next level, I also designed some helpful extras. For stronger writers, I included editing checklists. {I printed these ones on bright paper to make them a little more exciting.}

I love these editing checklists!

And for new writers, I created alphabet charts to help them find the next letter they’re trying to sound out in a word.

Slide a copy of the alphabet chart in kids' writing folders to help them easily identify letter sounds.

    Hi Malia,
    I always look forward to your interesting activities and ways to present tasks to improve skills. However, it was disconcerting to see journal prompts for boys separate from girls. I think in todays world it may be better to present the variety of prompts you have without this delineation in order to be considerate of those who do not fit the stereotypical model. I hope that you at least ponder of this thought, as I really enjoy how you make learning fun.

    Malia,

    Hi. The fact is, boys have different interests and motivators than girls. As a teacher with experience in trying to motivate those boys who are not as interested in learning sound literacy skills as they are in planes, trains, construction, machinery, dinosaurs etc this set of resources looks WONDERFUL. This will certainly be worth a try to get those boys grounded with the essential basics that will set them up for success in their schooling life. It breaks my heart to see non-academic boys struggle to read and write, thinking they are a ‘failure’ or even worse, ‘stupid’. Thankyou Malia, from the bottom of my heart, for creating these resources.

      Thank you for your thoughtful note, Caroline! I am thrilled that these gender-specific resources are helpful for you too. My #1 goal with these packs was creating a set of writing prompts that would be naturally motivating for kids. I hope your students love them as much as my own kids do!
