Getting Ready

To prep, I printed the beginning sound puzzles (below) on cardstock and laminated them for extra durability. Doing so usually allows me to get several years out of a center.

Once I finished laminating, I cut out the puzzles. I found it easiest to cut out each puzzle in its completed shape and then go back and cut apart the individual pieces.

Beginning Sound Valentine’s Day Puzzles

This center contains 26 different puzzles, covering all letters of the alphabet.

Each puzzle has two pieces. One piece is a heart with an uppercase and lowercase letter on it, and the other piece is a heart with something that starts with that letter inside.

Students started the beginning sound puzzle center by choosing a puzzle piece – either the the picture card or the letter card.

One student chose letter card “K” first.

I always encourage my students to say the letter and the sound it makes. Some even enjoy tracing the letters with their fingers.

She then searched through the remaining cards and found the picture card that started with the letter “K”: a key!

Differentiating the Puzzles

26 puzzles, with two pieces each, can be a lot for some students.

To minimize frustration for these children, you can easily introduce the center by providing students with only 6 or 7 puzzles at a time.

I would usually do this at my teacher table with students who were early in their understanding of beginning sounds.  As they mastered the ones I gave them, I slowly added more.

  2. These are perfect for centers! I would love for the pictures to be editable. I have a mixed classroom and have to provide both english and spanish center activities for my kiddos. It’s just so hard to find spanish resources.
