Getting Ready

To prep the coverall activity, I printed the Teen Number Coverall game board (below) on white cardstock and laminated it for durability.

Note: There is also a black and white version of the game board that is included in the download that could be printed on green cardstock.

Then, I grabbed a paper clip and pencil for my students to spin the 10-19 spinner.

I chose to use gold coins from the Dollar Tree as markers for the game board, but you could also use cubes, counters or chips.

Teen Number Coverall Activity

To play the game, my students took turns spinning the 10-19 spinner.  They put the point of their pencil on the center of the spinner, inside the paper clip.

They flicked the clip with their fingers to make it spin. Then, they said the number the spinner landed on and covered the matching ten frame on the game board.

To hold them accountable for their work, I had my students say, “10 and ___ more is ___.”

Students continued taking turns spinning the spinner until they covered all of the shamrock ten frames on the board.

When teaching teen numbers, I want my students to recognize the concept of “ten and some more” so I encouraged them to recognize the group of ten on the ten frame and the extra ones on the other ten frame.

Ultimately, I want my students to be automatic with recognizing the number of dots versus counting each dot individually.  This coverall activity was the perfect way to practice this!
