Tantrums. With three kids under the age of seven, we’ve had more of them than I can count.
In the checkout aisle at the grocery store.
On the floor of our local pancake restaurant.
And – one of the most stressful for me to manage – in the airplane sitting just a few feet away from dozens of innocent passengers.
Just thinking about tantrums makes my palms start to sweat. You too?!

When I found out about the new Feeling Buddies for Families Toolkit, I was eager to give it a try.
The creator, Dr. Becky Bailey, has spent decades helping teachers and administrators derail meltdowns. I was eager to apply her simple tantrum busting tips at home.
Stopping Tantrums Before They Start
One of the toolkit’s biggest surprises to me was its approach. Rather than focusing entirely on how to react to children’s tantrums, the toolkit included tons of ways to actually prevent them.
The kids and I set up a “safe place” in our playroom where they could go to calm down from big emotions when they needed space.
We learned about how emotions like sadness, fear, anger and frustration look and feel so the kids could recognize them when they started to brew.
And we practiced taking deep belly breaths to calm down so that we could respond to our emotions rather than simply reacting to them.
Helping Kids Cool Down from Tantrums
Using the Feeling Buddies for Families Toolkit as a guide, I felt newly empowered to face my three year old’s next meltdown.
I’d learned how to help her recognize her emotions so that she could better self-regulate.
We named the feelings and then used the toolkit’s step-by-step guide to come up with a healthy response.
Are meltdowns a thing of the past in our house? No. We still have to work through those big emotions and sometimes they just feel so overwhelming that my daughter (or one of the boys) lose it.
But they have definitely improved. They aren’t as frequent and they aren’t nearly as huge.
And one of the most helpful changes of all has come with me. I feel more confident about how to respond to tantrums and meltdowns because of the toolkit’s clear, step-by-step road map.
