My kiddos have been drawn to this shimmery, shiny, glitter-filled playdough like moths to a flame. And how could they not be?!  There is truly something magical about this ultra sparkly St. Patrick’s Day playdough. It lets kids’ imaginations run wild.

We made two batches of the St. Patrick’s Day playdough: glittery gold and shimmery shamrock. For each recipe, we simply added all the ingredients to a pot, mixed until the lumps were gone and then cooked over low heat, stirring often.

The dough started to thicken and pulled away from the sides of the pot.  I turned off the heat once the dough thickened but was still a little sticky, and allowed it to cool enough to handle.  After several minutes, I dumped the still tacky dough onto a clean counter and kneaded it until smooth and no longer sticky.

Playing with the Playdough

Once cooled, I set out a tray with gold coins, tiny shamrocks, a couple leprechaun peg dolls, and heart cookie cutters and invited the kids to play.

My daughter started cutting, rolling, and flattening gold coins to fill the leprechauns’ pot. She then used the green dough to make clothes and hats for the leprechauns. Of course, the little men needed a gold closet to hang up their new wardrobe!

Sparkly St. Patrick's Day Playdough

My son, who is obsessed with snakes, made a giant gold coin eating snake.  Lucky for the leprechauns the snake had no interest in eating anything but gold.  He then began hiding coins under green mountains while I tried to guess where they went.

With the afternoon sun streaming in, their play looked truly magical with tiny flecks of light bouncing all around the room.  Gotta’ love the glitter!

    1. Hi Bridget,

I purchased blank peg dolls from Etsy and then drew the faces on with Sharpie paint pens. I hope that helps!
