This fun sight word game was inspired by one of my kindergarteners favorite games called Beetle. But since my stomach turns at the mere mention of anything creepy crawly, I decided to give it a little twist and name it “Roll a Sight Word Alien” instead.

Sight Word Game Prep

To make the game, I gathered my supplies:

    • Several blank sheets of white paper.
    • A couple of markers.
    • A die or wooden cube.
    • Blank circle labels.
    • A printout of the Sight Word Alien Game Sheet here.

This first time around, I wanted my son to practice the words {for, was, of, the, it, have} so I wrote each one next to a blank on the game sheet like this:

Then I stuck one word sticker on each side of a wooden cube I’d picked up at the craft store. {I love using wooden cubes because when I’m ready to switch out the words, I just peel off the stickers and add new ones.}

I gave my son a blank piece of paper and a marker and asked him to roll the die and read the word that landed on top. The first roll landed on {of} so he read it out loud and looked at the game sheet to find the matching body part: an alien body.

Since I was Player Two, I rolled next and drew the corresponding alien body part on my own sheet of paper.

When one of us rolled a body part that we did not need, we lost our turn. For example, since the alien shown on the game sheet has only one body, when my son rolled {the} a second time, he could not draw another body on his paper so he lost his turn.

The first player to roll and draw an alien was the winner!

  1. I’m a homeschooling mama and we played this today for our sight word activity and it was a hit! My 6 year old really learned his words and had fun drawing. For my 3 year old, I just used letters instead of sight words and he had so much fun getting to join big brother at “school.” Thanks for the great activity!

  2. I am a pre-service teacher, and also a mom and grandma. I’m always on the look out for fun learning games, so I love your site! Since I don’t know what grade I’ll get to teach, I especially appreciate how many of your games are easily tweaked for various levels. Keep up the good work!

  3. Thanks for the fantastic alien game to practise sight words. I will definitely use it.

    Is the last sentence of the instructions on the print out sheet supposed to say “The first player to add all of the body parts to the alien like the picture to the right wins.”
    The picture of the alien is actually BELOW or to the LEFT.

  4. Thanks so much for this game! Love it. It is already printed out and ready to go for tomorrow’s school day with my kiddos. 🙂
