Getting Ready

The prep work was as quick and easy as it comes for these counting cards.

I printed the cards (HERE) on cardstock to give them extra durability and cut each one apart. Then, I grabbed the bag of googly eyes I’d picked up from the dollar store and invited Middle Brother (age 3.5) to join me.

Note: Our bag had an assortment of different-sized googly eyes. The smallest size worked best because my son could fit lots of them on the monster faces. I’d recommend grabbing those if you’re making a trip to the store.

Monster Counting Cards

My son couldn’t wait to get his hands on the counting cards. Middle Brother’s still working on recognizing numbers, so I read them out loud with him and then gave him the number one card. He read the number and added one eye. Then, he eagerly plowed through the next four cards.

Middle Brother needed help reading the numbers past five but he was up for the challenge – the googly eyes were magically motivating.

One card after another, he read the number and added a matching set of eyes to the monster. By the end of the counting cards, we had a good number of scary-looking monsters!  Such a fun and simple activity – and not scary at all!

  1. I really love these monsters! However, the green and purple ones aren’t lined up with the surrounding color and it’s bad enough that I don’t want to print them. I’ve tried opening them on different devices and it all looks the same. Any idea what’s wrong?
