Activity for ages 3 to 6.
I always think the pumpkin season is our favorite classroom theme… until it is time for gingerbread! This Gingerbread ABC Game is a simple way to incorporate some seasonal fun into mastering letters and sounds, ABC order and even CVC words!
This game is incredibly simple to prepare. I simply printed out the gingerbread and gumdrops (below), laminated them for sturdiness, and then cut them out.
We were ready to jump in and start matching upper and lowercase letters!
Playing the Game
To play the game, I spread out our gingerbread and gumdrops. I like to start with a few and then increase the number of letters for an extra challenge when kids show they are ready! It also makes the game exciting to play multiple times when they are wondering which letters I am adding in next!
I grabbed my first upper and lowercase pair: A and a. I placed the gumdrop on the uppercase gingerbread man to show a match. After all, that’s where they belong, right?!
Then I invited a couple of my students to pair the other combinations in our stack.
After all of the gingerbread were paired up, We mixed up the cards and spread them out face down on the table. Kids took turns turning over one rectangular gingerbread man card and one rounded gumdrop card. They read each letter and, if they were a match, placed the duo in front of them.
If they weren’t a match, the player simply turned both cards over again in the same spot and let the next player try her luck.
Extend the Game
To provide a fun extra challenge, I used the gumdrops or gingerbread to make CVC words (cat, bed, hop)! I found this especially fun for my students who mastered their letters and sounds and were ready to tackle spelling.
The class also loved using them as flashcards to practice letter sounds and laying them down in ABC order to work on sequencing.
There are so many ways to use these cute gingerbread and gumdrops!
