The LEGO Mat

There are so many fun ways to sneak in math with this simple LEGO mat. Whether you need to practice colors, counting, number recognition, addition or subtraction, kids will happily get to work rolling, building and matching.

Getting Ready

Prepping for this LEGO mat activity was as quick and easy as it comes. I printed the LEGO mat on cardstock to give it extra durability.

Then, I grabbed a playing die and a bin of LEGO DUPLOS. (Regular LEGOS would work well, too.)

5 Ways to Play with LEGO Mats

There are so many different ways to play with the LEGO mat. First, I wanted Middle Brother (age 3.5) to practice counting from 1 to 20 and matching colors. He looked at the color of each square and covered it up with the same colored block. 

Then, we counted the blocks together, touching each one as we said the number out loud. Touching the LEGOS helped his brain connect the number to the object.

Next up on our to-do list was working on number recognition and number concept. We cleared the mat and started building towers of each number.

The high teens and twenty were so tall that we had to lay them on the floor to keep them from falling over and breaking. Middle Brother was VERY excited by the drama of it all.

I wanted Big Brother (age 5.5) to work on addition so I came up with a couple of other activities for him. He rolled a die and added that many bricks – trying to race to 20 as quickly as possible.

Then, he worked on subtracting by rolling and taking away bricks. (This was his favorite!)

And finally, he challenged himself to try and roll all twenty numbers with dice. He took one die in his hand and began rolling it. Each time he landed on a new number, he covered it up with a LEGO. When all of the numbers 1 to 6 had been covered, he grabbed a second die and started working on the numbers 7-12. Then he grabbed a third die for the numbers 13-18 and a fourth to roll 19 and 20.

It took some serious perseverance but he was so proud when he finally accomplished his goal.
