Getting Started

To prep, I grabbed a few supplies:

To customize, I opened up the free printable PDF (HERE) and had my boys pick a favorite. Big Brother (age 5.5) wanted the rocket and Middle Brother (age 4}) picked the football.

I typed their name in the grey box of the bag tag and it automatically loaded onto all 16 tags. Then, I printed the bag tags with their favorite designs on cardstock to give them extra durability.

I used scissors to cut the bag tags apart and chose a front and back. The two sides could either be the same color or mixed and matched to your liking. (If you’d like to write in your home address or phone number on the back half, go ahead and add it now.)

I placed the Scotch Self-Seal Bag Tag on a flat surface with the clear side down and open. I set the front of the printable tag face down on the clear surface and centered it evenly.

I laid the back face-up on top, making sure the edges lined up with the front card.

Then, I bent the top sheet back slightly to separate the backing. I rolled evenly across the back of the tag while applying slight downward pressure to remove the backing before smoothing and sealing the edges.

I attached the plastic loop to the hole at the top of the bag tag…

And then hung the new bag tag on my son’s backpack. He was THRILLED!

  1. I’m confused about putting the child’s name in the “gray box.” Where is it; what am I missing? Thanks.

    1. Hi Carmela! At the bottom of each tag is a gray box. Click on it and type your child’s name. It will automatically load into every tag. Enjoy!

      1. These tags are adorable. Thanks for sharing! However, I am not seeing a gray box either. Is there a program you recommend we use to open and type into the PDF?

  2. I cannot figure out how to make the text smaller. My daughter’s name will not fit inside the box. I’ve tried everything!

    1. Hello Kelley,

I am happy to help. Please make sure you have the most recent version of Adobe as all of our freebies required to work properly – it is free- and available here:

      http://get.adobe.com/reader/otherversions/

      2) Open your file finder and right click (or double click) on the file in your download folder.

      3) Choose OPEN WITH–> ADOBE READER.

      4) You may be prompted to choose Adobe Reader as your PDF reader in the future. To avoid problems in the future, click YES.

      5) Close all windows and reopen link- it should edit properly.

      Warmly,
      Kimberleigh

  3. I wish I could find these 3M pouches in Canada (at a store and not online). Brilliant idea, I just can’t make them – hopefully 3M will help….awesome tutorial – thanks so much!

    1. Hooray Joy! Fingers crossed you find the pouches! Thanks for the kind words!

  4. Hi! I am wanting to use these tags on my students backpacks. Is there anyway to not have the auto fill option? I would like each tag to have a different name. Does that make sense?! 🙂

    1. Hi Courtney,
      Thanks for reaching out.
I apologize, but the way that the page is formatted will default to auto-fill.
The only option I can think of to save you on printing, would be to “clear” the type here form, print them as blanks, and just write in the name.
      Hope that helps!

  5. Thanks for these cuties! Unfortunately, I’m struggling to change the font size as well. I’ve followed your above instructions multiple times and updated my Adobe version. No luck 🙁

    1. Hi Heather,
I apologize that you’re having trouble editing these bag tags.
Here are a few things you can try:
Please be sure that you are working with the file that has been downloaded and saved to your computer.
We have also found that it seems to work best if you download the fonts suggested in the pack, close the file, then open a new version on Adobe.
If it’s still not working, you can email me at hello@www.playdoughtoplato.com for further assistance.
      Warmly,
      Ashley // Happiness Ambassador

  6. What a great printable ! Thanks for sharing ! I just wish it could be possible to write different names on each page. I would like to offer a backpack tag for my students but I don’t want to print 1 page per student.
Maybe this is something you could modify ?

    Thanks a lot !

    1. We have added it to our list, Julie.
However, right now we are focusing on getting distance learning materials to our teachers, so it may be a bit before it’s updated.
      Warmly,
      Ashley // Happiness Ambassador

  7. Hi!

I am not able to type in the bag tags at all, the file downloads- but it downloads as a normal file – nothing to type in.
    Thanks!
