These free blend posters and dice are a great visual way to teach blends like CR-, GL- and SK-. The posters are great as a classroom display or flashcards, and the dice provide an engaging way for children to think of words that begin with each blend.  Also included is a chart of blend examples!

Blend Posters

I printed the blend posters on cardstock to give them extra durability. Then, I cut them apart and laminated them.

When introducing blends to the children, say the individual sounds of each letter and then the sound they make when they go together. I usually work with R blends, then move onto L blends and S blends at another time.

Focusing on one poster at a time, name each blend and brainstorm a list of words that start with that blend. For example, when talking about GR- blend, the children in my class came up with words such as “green, grill, grapes, grasshopper, greedy and grass.”

It’s helpful to write each blend in the middle of a blank sheet of paper and then draw a picture next to each word to help jog kids’ memories.

(I’ve included a word list as a starting point, but children are often fantastic at coming up with words on their own!)

After I’ve introduced a blend, I hang up the poster with the children’s ideas and use the printed posters as flashcards to help the children recall the sound.

Blend Dice

The dice help motivate children to recall the blend sounds. I made my dice with paper but cardstock works well, too. I cut along the outside edge of each dice and glued the tabs together to make a cube.

BlendsDice

The dice are a great way of helping children orally produce single-syllable words by blending sounds.

I have found the dice helpful for small group work. Once sitting in a circle, the children simply rolled the dice and thought of a word that started with that sound. When one student rolled CL-, she said, “cloud!”  When another child rolled SL-, he said, “slide.”

They continued rolling and naming words for several minutes. Later on, the children rolled the dice and drew a picture of something that began with that sound.

      1. Hi there!
When you click the blue “Download Here” button, a pop-up should open. You can try checking to make sure your browser isn’t blocking pop-ups from the site or try using a different browser. If you happen to be attempting the download at school, your district’s web filter may be blocking the pop-up. Let me know if you’re not able to get the posters!
