Teaching the five senses (sight, smell, hearing, taste and touch) helps kids learn how they make observations in the world. That’s why it’s the perfect science topic for children in preschool, kindergarten or first grade!
These 12 motivating, hands-on activities make learning the 5 senses irresistibly fun and easy to prep. They’re great to use as whole class activities or science centers.

The 5 senses unit starts with a set of memorable rhymes – one for each sense. Middle Brother (age 5) and Little Sister (age 3) agreed that the taste rhyme was their favorite. (It had them at “sweet treat”!)
(Sung to the tune of “Farmer in the Dell”.)
We taste with our mouth.
We taste with our mouth.
A treat that’s sweet.
Fruit that I eat.
We taste with our mouth.
We just *HAD* to try out the Mystery Bean activity next. The kids loved using their sense of taste to guess the flavor of each jelly bean.
Identifying mystery sounds was loads of fun too! The kids shook each numbered plastic egg…
and used their sense of hearing to name the object inside.
They used their sense of smell to guess secret scents,
and used their sense of touch to name objects hidden in balloons.
With a strong understanding of the 5 senses under their belt, the kids put their new skills to the test to solve a 5 sense detective case!
Unfortunately, the salt and sugar labels had fallen off of our jars. (Oh no!) The kids had to use all 5 of their senses to figure out what jar held sugar and what one had salt. The kids were SO engaged!
My little scientists made an interactive 5 senses flap book…
And played two board games challenging them to name things they could observe with each sense they landed on.
So much fun packed into one unit!
