Writing Letters From Head to Toe

Writing Letters From Head to Toe

Helping children learn to write letters of the alphabet takes a lot of work.  For many active kids, the process can seem quite… well… boring.  My kindergarteners loved practicing letter formation in different ways.  One of their favorite activities was using their whole body to write from the top of their head to tips of their toes.  Literally.  This is a simple way  to teach your child to write letters at home.

To start, write a large version of the letter you are practicing on a piece of butcher paper.  The goal is to make the letter large enough that it reaches from the top of your child’s head to the bottom of her toes so that she needs to use big body movements to write it.  Ask your child to trace  the letter with her finger as you “sportscast” what she is doing.  For example, sports casting the letter h would sound something like this: “You are starting at the top of your head and drawing a line down, down, down, down to your feet.  Back up to your belly button, then make a hump and reach over to your other foot.  Announcing your child’s moves is great for auditory learners, visual learners love seeing the letter and (you guessed it!) kinesthetic children love being able to touch the letter and move their body.

Three of my favorite follow up activities are painting the letter, tracing the letter with several different colored crayons to make a rainbow, and copying the letter with chalk.  What other ways do your children like learning to write?  Share in the comments below.
