The Fastest Shortcut for Developing a Lifelong Reader

Many parents hope their child will grow up loving to read.  Since young children enjoy mimicking their parents, it makes sense that modeling reading is a great way to encourage that interest.  Yet, if you are like me, you may find it difficult to find the time or energy to add “reading” to your busy schedule.

So, how can you help your child understand how important reading really is?  The answer is surprisingly simple.  Instead of reading in your head, begin reading out loud.  Read the ingredient list when you are cooking.  Share the directions on the Advil bottle when you have a headache.  Read the emails on your smartphone and the game rules during your family game night.  In fact, read this post out loud.  You might feel kind of silly at first but I promise you that the embarrassment will be worth it.  Your child will quickly see the importance of learning to read and will be well on her way to developing a lifelong love of reading.  And the best part is that reading out loud doesn’t cost a thing.  It requires no extra time or money.  It is truly the free and easy way to develop a love of reading.
